Created under the theme "Blind For Love”, presenting A Magazine Curated By Alessandro Michele.
The creative director invited friends of the House, including artist Petra Collins, songwriter Florence Welch, actress Dakota Johnson, filmmaker Gia Coppola and photographer Glen Luchford to collaborate with him on his issue.
A Magazine Curated By Alessandro Michele is the latest chapter in a historical fashion narrative that began in Antwerp, Belgium in 2001, when the founders of A Magazine were searching for a new freedom of spirit in the increasingly loud and compromised world of fashion publishing. It was dreamed up as a carte blanche concept, a blank slate for a fashion designer invited to edit (or ‘curate’) the pages of each issue, with a free reign to choose all the contents that express their vision at any point in time. Since its inception, the magazine has welcomed a diverse selection of designers from across the globe, male and female, younger and older, who work alone or in pairs, for fashion houses or their own labels.

When Alessandro Michele was invited to curate N°16 earlier this year, his mind was made up almost immediately with a long list of friends and dream collaborators he was adamant to include in his issue. Before long, it became clear that the magazine was to become governed by the theme of #BlindForLove, words taken from an 18th century manuscript (written by Fanny de Beauharnais) that have been so crucial in Alessandro’s journey so far as Creative Director of Gucci. Such a liberated, worldly subject matter as being ‘blind for love’ was sure to incite all sorts of jubilant, intimate responses, and it did – approached as it was by an international cast of avant-garde photographers, artists and other creatives from Nan Goldin to David Sims, Ryan McGinley, Venetia Scott, Glen Luchford, John Currin, Inez & Vinoodh, Ari Marcopoulos, and Exactitudes. Each took #BlindForLove into their own hands in a rich and unique reflection of the theme, in a whirlwind of colour and life that explores the human condition via an unprecedented cornucopia of references throughout the ages: from neo-impressionist paintings to British pop culture, spectacular natural vistas, and urban grunge.

For Gucci Stories, we chose a selection of images from the issue that highlight the idea of the ‘female gaze’, a potent photographic ideal that shines through the magazine in images like sharp shooter Annie Oakley’s heart-shaped target immortalized by Annie Leibovitz, to the polaroid of a young Dakota Johnson (sixteen and heartbroken, according to her). Coupled with Gia Coppola’s Joshua Tree portfolio narrated with poems by actress Rowan Blanchard and photographer Petra Collins’ intimate portraits of her family in Budapest, they tell secrets and stories of womanhood that speak of intimacy and friendship, erotica, motherhood, and sisterhood throughout the ages. Package those with the personal snapshots, paintings, and anecdotes of talented women from Tavi Gevinson to film stills from Cindy Sherman and a hand-written song by Florence Welch, the issue paints a flourishing picture of contemporary womanhood.
