In Japan, ‘otaku’ are known for their obsessions, from clothing and manga to video games and guitars.

And while the term is most commonly associated with men, there are certainly women who fit the bill. What would happen if the otaku was a young woman who dreams of musical stardom? Just ask Merry Lamb Lamb.

Collaborating with the Hong Kong designers Somewhere Nowhere Studio for #GucciGig, Merry Lamb Lamb imagined a room for an otaku girl where a budding performer can emerge. The room features multiple keyboards and synths; quirky stuffed animals and dolls; a bullhorn; and fresh flowers. In the center of it all is a red pleather couch matching Merry Lamb Lamb’s all-red jacket and skirt ensemble and her oversized, square-frame Gucci glasses in smooth Havana acetate.

There is nothing geeky about Merry Lamb Lamb’s reimagined otaku girl room. Rather, it’s an ode to otaku culture and pursuing your own hobbies and desires in your own space, to fulfil your own fantasies. Photos and animations like those are taken with smartphones every day by young fans—it’s a performance both online and off.

Merry Lamb Lamb describes her unique, downtempo house music simply as “merry wave”. Her light, whispery vocals paired with low, minimalist synths make for the perfect musical comedown from a late night at a club.

But in the comfort of her own room, the performer is free to be as silly, confident, and free as she wants to be, away from any potential judgments or criticisms from the outside music scene. The inspiration comes from real life — the musician spent uncountable hours playing video games and reading comic books in a room of her own as a child. — Britt Julious.
