Talking gender equality with writer and activist Scarlett Curtis for CHIME FOR CHANGE’s 25 For 25 series, featuring interviews with activists and leaders to mark Women’s History Month and the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995.
What are your hopes and expectations for gender equality in the next 25 years?
We need to start getting laws in place to protect women via systems. Domestic violence, FGM, Equal Pay, Sexual Harassment; these are all things that could be helped by legislation and yet we’re relying on activists not governments to fix them!

What advice would you give younger generations on how to advocate / work for gender equality as they get older?
My main advice would be to start small! You’re not going to achieve everything you want to achieve as quickly as you would like but if you focus on a small issue affecting women in your community/local area you can build up a foundation for activism and start from there. Maybe think about something you’d like to change in your school or university and start a campaign! If you haven’t got the time then consider donating to or volunteering for a charity you love! Sometimes supporting a project is more helpful than starting your own thing.

Who do you look to as an example / role model in the fight for gender equality?
I’m most inspired by people who have been in this fight for a LONG TIME and still haven’t given up hope. People like Gloria Steinem, Taranna Burke, Jude Kelly, Jess Phillips, Gabby Edlin - they've never given up hope and know that change will come slowly but surely.
