Where street art meets fine French dining, Bibo restaurant is located in an extraordinary space evoking a 1930s feel of form and function.
In the restaurant, seasonal French gastronomy is served alongside the works of some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists including Banksy, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons. Bibo restaurant is housed in the former regional headquarters for the ‘Compagnie Générale Française de Tramways’ (CGFT), abandoned when the company’s plans to manage the Hong Kong tram systems never came to fruition. A few remnants of that enterprise linger; some furniture, financial ledgers, train timetables and unused ticket rolls. This is the space now known as Bibo.
Inside, the restaurant and bar embodies a 1930s Parisian balance between form and function. A striking entrance features marble floors and elegant light fittings. Everything has a curved functionality, invoking mechanical engineering and transportation design.
As guests descend into the buzzing bar, Bibo’s commitment to French Art Deco is evident, from the arched ceiling corners to the brass pipes, parquet and French oak floors. Three distinct floor designs, each over a hundred years old, are revealed throughout the space. Layers of unevenly stacked marble create the bar, referencing abandoned construction sites. Dining tables are created from gently misaligned stone slabs.
Behind the bar, a world-class mixologist crafts unexpected cocktails, many of which are creative renditions of timeless classics, with unusual ingredients like vintage spirits and homemade syrups.
Separating the bar from the main dining room, the library is a quiet nook of the restaurant with plush seating, a fireplace, and a bookshelf housing pieces by Kaws, Takashi Murakami and murals by British artist Pure Evil.
In the restaurant, seasonal French gastronomy is served alongside the works of some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists including Banksy, Damien Hirst, Daniel Arsham, Jeff Koons and Aya Takano.
Leading an all-encompassing rebirth of the restaurant, Executive Chef Nicholas Chew now leads Bibo’s culinary team. The Michelin Star Chef—who brings his wide-ranging Japanese and Peranakan culinary background—has recently created an entirely new French-inspired menu, to be tasted with Bibo’s wine collection, which features over 140 different varieties.

Bibo Restaurant and Gucci
To celebrate the #GucciGram Tian digital art project, taking place during Art Basel Hong Kong 2016, Gucci held a private dinner at Bibo restaurant. Rich in artworks merging traditional Hong Kong pieces together with European intellectual art, the restaurant was the perfect location to host guests including influencers and artists who collaborated on the project.
