August 29, 2011 – Madonna presented at the 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema during a ceremony and private dinner hosted by Frida Giannini on September 2nd at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. Madonna was in Venice to present her film W.E. which she directed and wrote.
The new annual award recognizes an outstanding artistic achievement by a woman in filmmaking. Nominees have been selected from a range of disciplines including director, actor, producer, cinematographer, director of photography, set designer, screenwriter, editor, and costume designer by an Advisory Committee led by Venice International Film Festival Director Marco Mueller.
-Caroline Champetier: director of photography, Of Gods and Men -Jessica Chastain: actor, The Tree of Life -Federica Pontremoli: screenwriter, Habemus Papam-Nansun Shi: producer, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame-Athina Tsangari: director and producer, Attenberg.
A jury led by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini selected the final recipient from this group of distinguished women. Giannini was joined on the jury by actors Robin Wright, Valeria Golino, James Franco and film journalist, curator and the Venice Film Festival’s US Programmer Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan.
In honor of this occasion, Gucci made a grant of US$25,000 to the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the name of the recipient of the 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema.
September 3, 2011, VENICE – During a private dinner and ceremony hosted by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini, Jessica Chastain received the 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema from Madonna.
