GUCCI BRINGS FLORENTINE CRAFTSMANSHIP TO HONG KONG

Gucci’s most skilled shoe artisans visited Hong Kong from July 12 to 20 to showcase their expertise at the Artisan Corner, an exclusive event that brings the craftsmanship of the House’s Florentine leather goods factory directly to its clientele. The craftsmen were stationed at custom-built workshops to display their work on signature styles and demonstrate expert techniques used in the shoe-making process.

Customers can witness firsthand the meticulous attention to detail and superb handwork that is involved in the production of every item in Gucci’s leather goods collection. The Artisan Corner will remain at the ifc Mall through July 14 and subsequently travel to Gucci’s Elements store in Kowloon July 18-20.

The Artisan Corner display includes custom work tables, a sewing machine, a leather stand, and metal tools, as well as additional background materials which show the shoes’ evolution from mood board to sketches. The craftsmen will focus on the 1953 loafer.

Designed in celebration of the legendary horsebit loafer’s sixtieth anniversary, the 1953 collection features a unique tubular construction that requires exceptional skill in its crafting. Only select shoemakers possess the expertise for this highly specialized operation: the tubular process consists of a specific upper which encloses the entire foot, leaving exposed only the vamp part, upon which the “tube” is sewn. In this construction the insole is absent, so that the shoe is light, pliable and comfortable. For decades Gucci’s artisans have employed this tradition and passed it down across generations. Now at the Artisan Corner, customers can view different phases of this handwork including sewing, dying, and assembling.

Customers who purchase a pair of shoes may have the artisan personalize them with an exclusive metal plaque embossed with the location and date.
The Artisan Corner in the Oval Atrium at the ifc Mall in Central will feature a unique exhibit of archival loafers on loan from Florence’s Gucci Museo. The display provides an account of the shoe’s evolution over the years – including styles from all of the past six decades. The designs see the application of Gucci’s bit hardware to a variety of materials and the pairing with other House signatures such as the web stripe, bamboo, and interlocking GG. The exhibit reveals a variety of proportions, including the heels that took the women’s loafer to new heights as well as a unique hybrid between the loafer and the ankle boot.
The Artisan Corner will commence in the Oval Atrium of the ifc Mall in Central from July 12-14, alongside the archival display. The artisans will then conclude their visit at the Elements store in Kowloon from July 18-20.
